CalDigit Tip of the Week Sep 26, 2012

Our first tip of the week is for the VRmini. By now everyone knows that one of the greatest features of the VRmini is that it has the ability to be bus powered via its FireWire connection making it a great solution for filming on location especially if it’s used in a mirrored RAID 1 configuration.

The Tip we have for the versatile VRmini will give you an extra boost when bus powering your drive. If you connect the Firewire cable to your laptop it will bus power the VRmini, but if you also connect the eSATA cable in addition to the FireWire cable the mini is actually smart enough to know to get the power from the FireWire connection and to use the faster eSATA connection to transfer the data.

This means that you will be able to get much faster speeds from 85MB/s that you would have got from just using the FireWire connection to 180MB/s by also connecting the eSATA cable to your laptop and still have a bus powered connection.

If you don’t have an eSATA connection or express card on your laptop, CalDigit supplies a laptop card – FASTA 2ex – for use with any Mac or Windows laptop with an express card slot.

Here’s an example of the VRmini being used by one of our customers:
