For this article we are going to focus on Final Cut Pro users working with ProRes footage, and how CalDigit storage can integrate into your workflow. ProRes has become a hugely adopted codec for video with the likes of Arri including ProRes recording in their Alexa cameras, AJA incorporating ProRes recording into their Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini recorders, and Blackmagic Design’s HyperDeck Studio recorder, and Cinema Camera all supporting ProRes recording.
When it comes to performance the VR2 has been a staple of CalDigit’s product line, and a mainstay of many creative professional’s edit suites for for a long time, due to its large capacity, and hardware RAID protection.
The VR2 is capable of editing up to 3 streams of ProRes 422 1280×720, and up to 2 streams of ProRes 422 1920×1080. It’s flexible interfaces can reach speeds of up to 250MB/s in RAID 0 when connected via eSATA. If you’re working with the LT flavor of ProRes then the VR2 can handle up to 5 streams of 1920×1080 ProRes. If HQ ProRes is more your thing then the VR2 can deal with 2 streams of ProRes 422 1280×720, and 1 stream of ProRes 422 1920×1080. The VR2 can even work with 2 streams of ProRes 4444 1920×1080 HD.
The VR2 is available in capacities up to 8TB and supports RAID 0, 1 and JBOD. It has two hot swappable drive modules, and an LCD display that allows you to configure the device. The VR2’s interfaces include eSATA, USB 3.0, FireWire 800 and FireWire 400.
CalDigit’s HDPro2 has world class performance, that is able to handle multiple streams of ProRes with the added protection of RAID 5.
The HDPro2 is capable of editing 33 streams of ProRes 422 1280×720, and 17 streams of ProRes 422 1920×1080. If you’re using the HQ flavor then the HDPro2 will work with 13 streams of 1920×1080. For ProRes 4444 the HDPro2 can work with 9 streams of 1920×1080.
